Most VRT calculators only show one number. We break out customs duty, VAT, and VRT separately — because they’re charged on different values, at different times, for different reasons.

This is NOT your Japan purchase price. VRT is charged on Revenue’s estimate of the car’s Irish retail value — check Revenue’s own VRT calculator for a defensible OMSP figure before you commit.

Methodology & sources

Customs duty EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (in force since 1 Feb 2019)
VAT Irish standard VAT rate, applied to CIF value (price + shipping/insurance) since duty is 0%.
VRT Revenue.ie — VRT Table 1, Category A (WLTP CO2 bands).

A separate NOx emissions levy may also apply to diesel vehicles and is not included in this estimate. VRT is calculated on OMSP (Revenue’s Irish market value estimate), not on the Japan purchase price.
